European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
