The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.

Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.

Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.

Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."

Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
