New research suggests that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals using such drugs must be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to original mass in about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Experts believe the way of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
People who have come off the jabs report a intense return of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is more common among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
