Federal authorities have officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Broader Implications
This courtroom confrontation represents the major response by Democrats in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
